PRACTICUM OPPORTUNITIES

As an active member of our community, G.H.Y.S. is pleased to offer unique opportunities to practicum students and volunteers from various institutions and facilities.

Our program helps students and volunteers gain valuable skills, in-depth knowledge, and core experiences that empower them to move forward confidently in the field of social services. For more information on how to work with us, please contact your practicum advisor to set up an intake at G.H.Y.S.

Here is what some of our past practicum students have said about working at G.H.Y.S.:

"My name is Lazare Hounnake Adele. I did my volunteer practicum at Gordon Neighbourhood House with Youth S.E.A.R.CH program after two years of counselling courses at VCC. It was a great opportunity for me because I have learned a lot in the short period of time. The main thing that I love about this centre is that they don't treat you just like a student; the communication is excellent and the environment is professional, they make sure that you're involved and participating fully in their projects. I even remember participating in their staff meetings not just like a simple observer, but they wanted to know my point of view and my suggestions which was very helpful to experience. Based on the experience I had there, I strongly recommended it to anyone who would like to do a practicum with their Youth Search program."

"I was a practicum student at Youth S.E.A.R.Ch., where I gained great insight and work experience in the employment counselling field. All the staff there were extremely knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and open in teaching me about how a skills link program operated. The Youth S.E.A.R.Ch. staff allowed me to be involved in all aspects of the program from co-teaching in the classroom to going on educational outings with the participants and I was very thankful to have been exposed to so much. The staff were also extremely patient in answering my questions and hearing my ideas, as they wanted to make this the best learning opportunity for me as they could. Ultimately, it was a great practicum experience, as I left having learned new skills and having met some wonderful people."

"My practicum experience with the CAP program at GHYS had been a truly rewarding experience. I was able to improve my counselling skills, expand my knowledge of Vancouver's resources, explore some of the issues faced by youth and collaborate with youth to reach personal goals. This practicum gave me the opportunity to integrate classroom theory into practice as well as develop my personal practice framework. GHYS was a great entry point for my practice in the non-profit sector."

"My practicum placement at Gordon House Youth S.E.A.R.Ch was a fun and enriching experience. The supportive staff and interactive environment provided a safe space for learning and personal growth. At G.H.Y.S. I had the opportunity to make meaningful connections with youth as well as with valuable teammates within the social service sector. I learned how to work within a non-profit agency that delivers exceptional service to multiple-barriered youth."

"I value what Youth S.E.A.R.Ch. does for the community. Being a local partner of Youth S.E.A.R.Ch. is important to my business as I believe the youth of today are facing increasingly challenging and diverse issues. As an employer, I pride myself on the ability to enrich these young people's lives by giving them an opportunity to learn and gain confidence in their abilities through a supportive environment."
